Alexander (Sandy) was born in Tubbercurry, County Sligo Ireland about May 2, 1827. While working in Sheffield England, he met and married Harriet (Annie) Thompson of Mount Shannon, County Clare, Ireland at Easter 1854. They returned to Mt Shannon after their marriage.
Alexander, Annie and their daughter Mary Ellen came to Canada about 1856, settling in Riverstown, Wellington County, Arthur Township, Ontario, near Mount Forest. They had nine more children. His brother, John, was already in Canada and another brother, George, soon joined them.
Alexander was a farmer, store-keeper, shoemaker and the first postmaster at Riverstown. He was also a member of the local Township Council.
