  • I believe my family descends from Alexander Gardiner and Margaret.

My 2nd Great Grandfather James Archibald Gardiner was born July 12, 1828 in the Moat, Cornashee, Aghalurcher, Lisnaskea, Fermanagh, Ireland.

His parents were Archibald Gardner born about 1795 also in he Moat, Cornashee, Aghalurcher, Lisnaskea, Fermanagh, Ireland and Ann J. Clarke born in 1813 in Lisnaskea.

Archibald Gardiner's parents were William Gardiner born about 1770 in Toolin, Cornashea, Aghavea, Fermanagh, Ireland who died in November 10, 1846 in the Union Workhouse, Lisnaskea, Fermanagh, Ireland and wife Mary born about 1773 in Fermanagh.

  • Information on My Heritage: Alexander Gardiner (Sr.) son of Archibald Gardiner, married to Margaret (surname missing). Children listed as: Elizabeth with married name of Hazzard, Agnes with married name of White, Archibald (2nd) John, Alexander (Jr), William (1) and Edward.

Information from Gardiner website by David Gardiner (Aus): Edward Gardiner (born circa 1741 Gortgranagh, Galloon, Ermanagh) married Jane ? Thorogood circa 1760.  Their children: Edward Isaac (circa 1768), James (circa 1770) married Jane Bryans, Anne (circa 1773) married Robert Jones, John (circa 1774), Archibald, circa 1776 married Anne Clarke on 11/9/1824, William Bap. 3/25/1777, married Isabella Bell Henderson on 11/18/1812 (first wife was Jane Anderson, married 11/9/1800) (Source IGI record) Note: according to this, Archibald who is married to Anne Clarke is the son of Edward Gardiner & Jane Thorogood, not the son of William & Mary Gardiner.  Is there anyone in Ireland who can look at the records to validate or invalidate this?

  • Ancestry.com had a copy of the marriage register record from the Lisnaskea Parish showing Archibald Gardiner and Anne Clarke married on April 5, 1824.  A cousin, John Gardiner who lives in the UK and had spent months researching the Gardiner family which included  searching land records had shared  a Lease Agreement for William Gardiner and Archibald Summers with Blaney Balfour from 1803 which mentions the land leased in Cornashea and it mentions Williams' son Archibald Gardiner being eight years old at the time.  James Archibald Gardiner was born in Cornashea, the area was the Moat.  This is why I believe that James Archibald Gardiner is the son of the Archibald mentioned as William Gardiner's son in the lease agreement.

I have seen trees showing Edward Gardiner born circa 1741 in Gortgranach, Galloon, but I have not seen proof that his son Archibald is the one who married Anne Clarke April 5, 1824 in Lisnaskea.

But if anyone in Ireland can validate or invalidate this that would be great!

  • My cousin John Gardiner also shared a copy of a Lease Agreement for Alexander Gardiner & Humphrey Thompson, both of Toolin with Blayney Balfour dating from 1769 for land in the manor of Cornashea and County of Fermanagh and it mentions Alexander's son, also named  Archibald aged about eight years so he would have been born about 1761.  John Gardiner's tree shows an estimated birthdate of 1735 for Alexander Gardiner from Toolin.
