Back to List

Alexander Marshall Rodgers was born in 1816 in the north of Ireland.

He was a farmer and a businessman.

His exact place of birth has not been identified.

A family member has mentioned that it was Donegal but there is nothing concrete enough to confirm this.

He came to the US in the 1840s. He came to a town in Pennsylvania and is believed to have lived there with a family called the Gourleys.  The Gourley famiy came from Counties of Antrim and Tyrone so it is felt that he too came from there and knew the Gourleys.

He had a sister named Ellen Rodgers. She was born in August of 1837 and was 21 years younger than Alexander.  It is not known if the had the same mother. Ellen never married.

He had a niece by the name of Nell O'Donnell born in April of 1873. It is believed that she and Ellen came to the US together in the late 1800s, as they are both listed as single from Ireland in the 1900 census in Pennsylvania.  They were living with one of Alexander's sons at that time.

Alexander was a Catholic and in the picture he is holding the Rosary bead cross in his hands.

Efforts are being made to identify Alexander through Nell O'Donnell since the Rodgers family cannot be located and there is no knowledge of his mother's or father's names.

His middle name of Marshall could be a family name. And his youngest son was Morgan Fleming, so perhaps these could be family surnnames after the mother or grandmother of Alsexander.
