Andrew Of Aughalatty Sheils1846

Andrew Of Aughalatty Sheils 1846

Back to List

My great grandmother was Hannah nee Sheils born 1885 of Aghalatty, daughter of Andrew born c1846, a farrier, granddaughter of William Sheils, also of Aghalatty.

I'm not sure if William was born at Aghalatty or moved there. Valuations in 1857 state he was there.

Would love to go back further than William and to learn more about my Sheils ancestors.

Other ancestors are McFaddens, McBride's, Logues, Bradleys, Herraghtys, Coyles. They were form Aghalatty, Clontallagh, Downings, Lower Dundoan, Devlinreagh.

Kind Regards

Darryl

  • Hi Darryl,

My Great Grand Parents were Peter Sheils and Catherine Sharkey who lived in Doagh and gave birth to my Grandmother Bridget Sheils in 1872. I can't find any trace of them other than my grandmother's and my Great aunt Catherine's and Great Uncle Michael's Births. Are these by any chance related to your branch of the family?

    Regards, William

  • Hi William, I’m not sure if there’s a connection, as haven’t learned much about the Sheils line of my family yet. From what I know, my Sheils were from around Carrigart area. There’s a lot of Sheils/Shiels/Shields families around Donegal. Whether  they are all connected in some way or not would be interesting to learn. The Gaelic for Sheils is O’Siadhail. If I learn of any connection i’ll post to let you know. Kind Regards, Darryl

  • Hi Darryl,

Thank you for your reply and the information regarding the Gaelic for the name Sheils. That I didn't know. I live in France now and as my Grandmother moved to Glasgow and married a Glaswegian and most of my family are Scottish I have been able to trace my ancestry links right bank on every branch bar the Irish one. It's realy frustrating and I think one day I will have to come over and visit the local church or anywhere that records are kept to try and find out more. My Gran was a very strict Catholic and being given the Gaelic Version of the Sheils name I may now see if I can find anything in the Catholic Church Registers which have been digitised.

You have been extremely helpful and I thank you once again,

    Best wishes, William

  • All the best with it William. I have a similar situation with my great grandfather Donald McFadden. I can’t find a birth record for him in Ireland. 1901 census he is stated as owner of land and it states “of Glasgow”. I’m wondering if his family were originally from Donegal and left for Glasgow during the 1840’s-1850’s when times were tough. Donald may have been born in Glasgow and the family returned to Donegal when things improved. This is just one theory. It may that your ancestors moved back and forth and your ancestor whose record you cannot find was born in Scotland. Just an idea. All the best with your research. Kind Regards, Darryl

  • Hi Darryl,

It can be frustraying this Ancestry research but also very rewarding. I presume you have been on Scotlands People which I use a lot and I had a quick look for the possibility of finding anything about your great grandfather. No luck in births but I did find this in the 1891 Census.

MCFADDEN DONALD1891 Male aged 12 years and this was in Camlachie Lanark.

I don't know if this is him but just a shot in the dark.

    Best of luck, William
