  • Hi, I know there are lots of McKennas in County Monaghan, particularly around Emyvale and Ballyrush where my ancestors are from.  I have been trying to find an Anne McKenna, who I believe was married to my 3rd great grandfather Patrick McNulty. Annes seem to be quite rare, so I thought it may be a family name,  He was born around 1819, but could have been earlier, hecame out to Australia in 1864, after his son Denis and Mary Carolan came here in 1860. So we presume his wife had died.  We can find no birth records for Patrick, Denis or another brother Owen.

I did find distant McKenna matches on Gedmatch living in Tedavnet, very close to Emyvale, hence my email

I wondered if you had a tree, if there might have been any McNultys in it?

  • Christine, I also have an Anna McKenna from Emyvale. She was born in 1815, married Bernard Farrell in 1837 in Errigal Traugh and emigrated to to Bethel, Sullivan County, New York, USA in 1853 with her husband and several of her children.

I hope to visit Emyvale next year if COVID allows! If there is anything I can try to find about your Anna McKenna while I'm there, I would be glad to try.

  • Hi Leonora,

Thankyou for your response, I am sorry for the delayed response, (I have trouble navigating this site).  This has been a real brick wall for me, if fact all information around my gggrandfather. I dont know if Ann came from emy vale, but i have DNA connections to McKennas on Gedmatch.

If you do get to Ireland, and in your search for your Ann McKenna you see any that might relate to a McNulty in Ballyrush, or any other families with an Anne I would love to hear about them.

Thankyou and good luck with your research.

    Christine

PS I am on Ancestry and My Heritage, if you are too, maybe we can compare notes.
