Bernard (O") Sweeny 1850

Back to List

I have been tracing my family line back to Tipperary, Ireland.  My great, great, great grandfather was Bernard Sweeny (or O"Sweeney) he was born in Thurles Rest on 3rd February 1850. His father was Michael Sweeney and I think has mother was called Mary Donoghue. His father is shown as a labourer on his marriage certificate. He married Catherine (kate) Connell on the 23 November 1871 at the Roman Catholic Chapel of Ballingarry. Bernard was a shopkeeper and also a postmaster possibly in Moyne. His wife Catherine was a farmers daughter and her father was called William Connell and they both came from Ballingarry. His children were Mary (b1873),Johanna (b1875), Anastasia (b1876), Anne (b1876) and Edward (Edmund) (b 1877).

The family are shown next in Kirkdale in Liverpool on both 1901 and 1911 census returns.  Bernard was then working on the Liverpool docks. I would like to try to find more on the Tipperary connection and the family and the possible reasons for leaving Ireland..

  • Hi,
This site..............will give BDM after 1864, you will be able to find siblings (if you know of any names) and match them up to marriages and then search for the parents deaths.
    https://www.irishgenealogy.ie

In this site ........... search for families in the 1901 and 1911 Census records, plus other records.
    www.nationalarchives.ie
Both of these should help. If you get stck please send a message.

  • Hi Terry,
I saw the name Green as a sponsor or witness in a record with the Sweeny marriage.
Are you the Greene family from that area? I think the area is Killea.

  • My 3xGreat Grandmother was Anastasia Sweeney(born 1775). She married Matthew Long and they had a daughter, Mary in Thurles in 1799.

Mary married Patrick Maher in Thurles on 19 July, 1825. Mary and Patrick eventually emigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1861 and died in the Ipswich area  in 1874 and 1884 respectively.

Just wondering if Anastasia is an ancestor of the Sweeney’s mentioned in the original post.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Margot

Many thnaks for all your efforts. It is really appreciated. It does fill in some of the gaps and also confirms family information that Bernard Sweeney was the postmaster. I assume that was in Moyne but dont know. It would be really great if I could find out more about this from somewhere.

    Again many thanks for looking.

    Best Regards

    Terry Green.

  •  BHI Margot

Having looked at the information you provided for the birth of Anto (Anastasia) Sweeney, one of the witnesesses was Mary Sweeney. So the parents of Bernard could be, as I thought originally, William and Mary Sweeney.

I also previously found a marriage of William Sweeney to Mary Donoghue for 25 July 1847 in Thurles. Grateful for your thoughts if you think thtat this might be the matching record or if you could see any other possible matches.

    Best Regards

    Terry

Hello Margot Apologies for not following this up quick enough. I have started revisiting the records after a break to reexamine the records. Unfortuantely, I cannot get hold of the records you highlighted earlier in your responses. I also forgot to get back to Carmel R with information she asked for which is the Marriage record for Bernard and Catherine Sweeney mentions a witness who is Johanna MAHER and the wedding took place in Ballingarry. The other witness was John Banon.. Many thanks Terry
