Brennan / Brannon ancestors from County Roscommon?

You are in good company ...

Mac Branáin aka Brannon / Brennan  (lit. son of branán) is the name of a great Roscommonmon family, chiefs of Corca Achlann near Elphin. Mac Branáin is now generally, but not quite correctly, Anglicised Brennan

  • According to MacLysaght, the present day Brennan of Roscommon, Sligo, Mayo and Leitrim were nearly all originally MacBranan. Galway Brennans probably also originated as MacBranan in Roscommon.

18th and 19th-Century transcribers often recorded a Co. Roscommon Brannon as BrennanBrannanBranon / Branan /McBrannanMacBrannan.
