Back to List

Brigidam Gordon, who is my great grand mother, was the eldest daughter and third child born to Dominic Gordon and Catharine Kelly. Bridget age 22 and her sister Maria Gordon age 20 left Ireland and immigrated from Plymouth, Devon, England and arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, 7th August 1880.In 1882 Bridget met and married Richard Thomas de Silva at St. Paul's Cathedral, Auckland, New Zealand. Richard was born in 1846, Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka). I do know how they met, but at the time Richard was the keeper of a Boarding House. So I presume Bridget and her sister boarded there when they arrived in Auckland. Their lives were not an easy one, often falling on hard times with Richard not always in employment. They had 10 children together. Bridget died on the 21 August 1929 of Broncopnuemonia and was buried on the 22 August 1929 at the Symonds Street Cemetery, Auckland. Richard died of old age on the 9 August 1926 and is buried in the Waikaraka Cemetery, Auckland.

Comments

  • Image removed. This is Brigadam's sister Maria Gordon my x3 Great Grandmother. She also settled in Auckland and married Henry Christopher who was of Danish/Irish descent. He was also Catholic and I think they would of met through the church. I myself as a descendant still live in Auckland along with many other family members. I would very much like to visit Ireland next year and would appreciate any further information you might have on the sisters.

    Many thanks Darnelle
