  • Hello,

I'm wondering if we are from the same line of Roscommon Drurys. My grandmother Margaret Ann Drury was born in 1892 in Teevenacreeva, which is near Ratra. Her father was named Peter Drury, and his father was Bartholomew Drury, mother Margaret Sharkey. Bartholomew had a second wife, I think, named Eleanor Brennan, and they had a daughter Catherine. Peter's other siblings were James born in 1870 and possibly an Eleanor.

I have been going through the civil and parish records for that area and everybody who lived there seemed to have the same names. It's maddening!!!

My grandmother was orphaned by age 12 and had to leave Ireland to live with an aunt Eleanor in Chicago.

It would be so nice to be able to fill in some gaps and I would love to hear what else you know.

    Thanks!

  • Sorry, I guess I just hit "reply" and it didn't go.

Hi Ann! I have spent a lot of time trying to find my grandmother's birthplace.  I do believe that it is in the same area that your Drury relatives were from.  Ratra looks like it could be not much larger than a farm field!  I am not quite sure of my grandmother's parents, but I am convinced they are from that area. I did look on Ancestry.com for your Bartholomew Drury and see that he married Margaret Sharkey (Shackey) in Feb. 1855.  Most of the info from back then is in Latin or easily misspelled!  I also found Eleanor Brennan (Breman) (Brenan)married to Bartholomew Drury but on Feb. 1846 which is before he married Margaret!!  They had children Jacob and Mariam, I believe.  I didn't find a Catherine.. I did find Bartholomew, a widower at one point (1901), living with his son James and Jame's wife Catherine and about 6 children in Lisduff, Fairymount, Roscommon.  Occupation listed as a farmer, which I think most of them were.

My grandmother came to America when she was in her early teens.  She had a brother who had already immigrated and she stayed with him for a while.

My daughter and granddaughter and I had a trip planned to explore that part of Ireland one year ago but was canceled because of covid.  We hope to do it sometime in the future.

Do you use Ancestry.com?  I have spent a lot of time this past year exploring Ancestry, it's a great diversion!

There are lots of people in that area named Drury as you said, and I don't think I will ever get to the real answer, but it is fun to try.  If you have any additional info let me know and I will dig deeper.
