Catherine Kelly 1858

Back to List

The Kelly family moved from Ireland to Darlington in the north-east of England some time between July 1867 when Catherine's little sister Mary was born in Corgowan and the third quarter of 1868 when brother Peter was born in Darlington. This is some time after the potato famine was at its worst. Catherine would have been aged around 9 or 10 at the time of the move. Her father Martin had leased 5 acres of land from John Blakeny at a cost of £2 a year according to Griffith's land valuation in 1854.

They ended up living in 1871 at 5 Grey Street in Darlington. Her uncle and aunt (mother Winifred's brother Daniel Hore and his wife Mary) lived in the next street, so they may have followed over. The attraction was work in the local ironworks. Both Catherine's father, Martin and her uncle Daniel were labourers in this industry.

Catherine's family also had mother Winifred's sister (Catherine Hore) and her brother (William Hore) living with them. William also worked in the ironworks as a labourer. Catherine's older brother John also worked there. In total there were 12 people living in the house, four of them working as labourers in the ironworks.

In 1881 the Kelly family had moved to the next street, Prescott Street, and Catherine found herself at the age of 22 living close to her future husband, John Foley, who was living at 31 Grey Street. They got married later on that year on Boxing Day and had moved to Stockton on Tees where they set up home in 8 Alice Street. There were many other Irish families living on the same street.

I am not sure at the moment when Catherine died, but I believe she ended her years living in an almshouse in Stockton and may have died in 1961 (but she would have been a ripe old age if this year is correct).
