Eliza Oakes, was born in Dublin, about 1834, daughter of John & mother unknown. In January 1859, aged 25yrs, she sailed from Dublin to Fremantle, Western Australia per the ship "Hamilla Mitchell", arriving in the Swan River Colony 6th April 1859. There were 103 Irish girls amongst the passengers [possibly a Bride Ship].

After living in the Colony for 8mths, possibly as a Domestic, she married Robert White, 6 Dec 1860, in Fremantle. They had 2 children - Robert Charles {1861-1863} & Harriet Sylvia {1863-?] Both were born & baptised in Fremantle. [Robert died in 1868]

She later worked, as a cook,  at the "Old Men's Depot" for homeless convicts, situated on the Swan River Perth. Soon she met Thomas Harris, an Englishman, who was the gardener & an orderly at the "Depot". Thomas & Eliza never married, but had 4 children - William Richard, {1866-1897}, Alicia Ann {1868-1886}, Thomas Markham { 1870-1926} My Grt Grandfather & Elizabeth Brunetta {1873-?}

Thomas Harries, died in 1900 in the Perth Public Hospital, at 76yrs. [he had been in the Colony for at least 50yrs, possibly as a free settler]

Eliza, in 1903, was living with her son Thomas Markham  & family on a farm in  Greenough, north of Perth. [nr Geraldton]

Eliza died, 1906 aged 75yrs, of TB of the lungs. She was survived by 2 children Thomas Markham & Harriet Sylvia Harris. She had been in the Colony for about 47yrs.

Eliza & Thomas are buried in the Karrakatta cemetery, Perth, West. Australia.
