Helena (Lena O’Brien) Connolly,
(1911, Fermoy, Cork Ireland – 1944, Boston, Massachusetts)

Oral history: Her children; her sister Mary (O'Brien) O’Flaherty of England; her brother, Tom O'Brien of Youghal, Cork and countless O'Brien/McGrath cousins in Waterford and Cork Counties, Ireland and in Massachusetts. One cousin indicated that Lena's father was probably in the Guarda Siochana in 1911 when the Census of Ireland for Barrack's Hill, Fermoy was recorded in 1911. Also, he indicated that when Lena's father was Corporal in the British Army during World War I, the family) lived in Deal, Kent, England.

Lena’s Nephew Kevin O’Flaherty wrote:
"Robert was a corporal in the Royal Engineers being in the building business this is a logical place for him as their jobs included various construction tasks. You will find no record of him as the records of two thirds of WW1 soldiers were destroyed when the Germans bombed Somerset House which was then the Public Records Office in WW2. I have searched & there is nothing. I do know however that he was involved in the 1st Battle of the Somme a deadly affair when 20,000 were killed on the first day. As an engineer he would probably have been a tunneler as the British dug under the German lines & planted explosives beneath them to mixed effect. My grandmother, mother & Lena plus a son were relocated to Deal, England in 1916 because of animosity to the families of British soldiers from the (Irish) rebels.

"An interesting anecdote that I picked up on one of the rare occasions that I actually listened to my grandmother was that the Somme only being about 100 miles away from Deal they could hear the artillery from the battle at night. Also she used to grow beetroot & the Germans fired a gun nicknamed "Big Bertha" across the channel at night to intimidate the populace however they had not quite got the rifling of the shells right & they broke up in flight so spread fairly harmless shrapnel all over the place including in the beetroot which was pockmarked with metal shards."

I believe that his mother (Lena's sister Mary, born in 1915 in Ireland was also relocated to Deal.

  • From Joe: Genealogists always have problems with oral history. We work best with official records. The oral history source was born and raised in England.

I have not found official records except for the Census of Ireland and US records for Lena that are shown below the oral history.

The 1911 Census shows the family living in Barracks in Fermoy.  The family always seemed to believe that Lena was born in Youghal.

You can change to the suggested words as long as you keep the word probably in the sentence. That word is essential! It takes me off the genealogy error hook!
