Back to List

Honoria was born and baptised in Schull, Co Cork, Ireland on 16 MAR 1866 to Patrick Leahy and Mary Coughlan.

She married Denis O'Flynn in 1889 and migrated to Australia in 29 May 1897 with her husband, 2 children and her brother Daniel Vincent Leahy onboard CUZCO travelling from London to Sydney.

In their 1st year in Queensland they lost their first child Herbert Leahy O'Flynn and then 2 years later, whilst pregnant with daughter Nora, her husband Denis O'Flynn dies from sunstroke after being lost in the Queensland outback near Thargomindah.

Two years later she married Eric McKeering in Brisbane and made her life there.

Passing away 25th Sept 1955. Honoria wrote a lovely letter to her neice Anne in 1945 telling all that she knew of her ancestors, sharing that "father's grandfather" (her great grandfather, known to us as James Leahy - the Kerryman) was "well-to-do" and resided in White Castle on Castle Island, which was a "a stronghold, a big square stone structure structure with walls so thick that a stair ran through the centre of them and there were no windows, just oblong appertures, probably used for shooting through...."

Honoria Leahy
