He was the second oldest of 8 children born to Thomas Murphy and Anastasia Daly of Glassganny Lr, Castlebridge, Co. Wexford. There were so many Murphy's in the district that he had his mother's maiden name before Murphy. In his youth he worked on the railroad in Wales and also on Wexford Railway.

Around 1915 he began work on Nunn's farm in Ballymartin. After a few years he became steward of the 100 acre farm and continued there up to 1970. In 1918 he married Maggie Wall. They lived in Ballymartin House and had 4 children: Stasia, Bridgie, Tommy and Sean.

On his retirement he moved back to Glassganny to the cottage where his daughter had lived. He worked in the garden planting flowers and vegetables as well as cutting hedges and hay in the site where he was born. He worked  into his 90's and died on 19th October 1975.

He is buried in Curracloe Cemetery with his father Tom, and his wife Maggie.
