James Diver was born about 1826 in Kilmacrenan, Donegal. His parents were Samuel & Eliza (maiden name unknown). In 1857 when James was married at St Mark & St Finian his father's occupation was a farmer.

James married Sarah Cheatley of Dromore on 30 April 1857 with witnesses John Craig and Tessa Burrows in attendance. The couple had two children Eliza born 1858 and shortly after their son Samuel was born in 1862 the family left Ireland aboard the Dr. Kane which sailed from Londonderry to Quebec in May.

The family made Picton, Ontario their home and had six more children. James' wife Sarah died in 1889 and he married her sister Mary (Cheatley) Maher also a widow.

DNA testing has put us in touch with descendants of another son of Samuel & Eliza Diver. Thomas Diver/Dever was born in 1830 and moved to Philadelphia in 1852 where numerous descendants still reside.
