James Lalor 1824

Back to List

James Lalor of Clone, Lisdowney, Co. Kilkenny, appears to have been born in 1824 and died in Walkin Street, Kilkenny City on 6th November 1896.  He is described as a Castlecomer farmer on his son Stephen’s marriage certificate, (Lisdowney is on the Laois/Kilkenny border about 18 km from Castlecomer).  James and his family moved to Acragar sometime before the birth of their daughter Mary in July 1859.  By the year 1888 he was in Kilkenny and gave his address as St. Canice’s Place when he registered the death, aged three minutes, of Stephen’s son, the twin of Elizabeth, when their mother, Maria, née Lynch, also died on 22nd August.

James married Eliza (aka Elizabeth) Brannigan.  Eliza was born in 1829 and died, of a heart disease of ten weeks duration, in Kilkenny on 6th June 1894, in the presence of her daughter Mary.

There is a family story that James and Elizabeth lived in the gate lodge of a great estate, possibly in Co. Louth, but were evicted, and moved to Kilkenny, when James killed the owner’s dog which was threatening Eliza during a row which arose when James refused to bow to the owner on his way through the gate.  There is, however, a townland called Lodge, in the Poor Law Union of Urlingford, civil parish of Balleen, Barony of Galmoy in the County Kilkenny, and it may be that that is where the incident occurred.
