I am new to Ireland Reaching Out and just starting my search.

My great-great Grandfather James Madden was from Clontuskert Galway.

He was born in 1816 abd died in Milford MA USA in 1870.  His parents were John Madden and Ann Curley (Curey).

James married Margaret Walsh. They had several children-I know of Patrick (my great grandfather born 1844, James born 1859 and Katie born 1857).

Any additional information is appreciate.

  • Hi, my g,g,g,g grandmother was called Margarita Maddens from Clontuskert. I wonder if they were related? I know she married a Patricius Lyons and had a child(ren) called Catherine (Kitty) Lyons in 1883 who married a Lawrence Grogan before they then moved to my hometown of Wigan in Lancashire England. Thry went onto have 4 children.

  • Hi Janetta

I have not been able to locate a lot of info on the Maddesn in Clontuskert. I know that a lot of Maddens came to America and settled in Milford Massachusetts in the 1850s.

    Maybe there us some relationship

  • My GGGrandmother was Bridget Madden born in 1845 in Clontuskert. She married Thomas Colohan. There are Madden buried in the old abbey at Clontuskert and there are many other related family buried there too. I shall be visiting  early 2022. I spent many years as a child biding my grandmother until her death in 1995. I have a James Madden relative who left Clontuskert and went to the USA and there are many descendants living there now  as I have had contact with some through DNA matching.

Thanks for the posting. I did see a baptism record for a Bridget Madden in 1847 in Parish Killimor & Tiernascragh in the Diocese of Clonfert.  My GGgr James Madden was married in Killimor Parish and his son Patrick (my GGr) was baptised in Killimor Parish.

There were many Maddens listed in the 1855 Census for Milford Massachusetts.

I happened to see a posting from Ireland school records "Cluain Tuaiscript" from an Agnes Madden in 1937 in Clontuskert which stated that there were two graveyards in Clontuskert-The Old Abbey and the other Clonkuskert Churchyard. The Old Abbey was in the Townland of Abbey Park and the other was in Crossconnel. Imagine that there are still many Maddens in Clonkuskert and I plan to visit sometime in 2022.
