James O'Brien

James O'Brien 1810

Back to List

James O'Brien was born in Cork in 1810.  By the 1850's he was living in Bristol, England, & worked as a Linen Weaver (according to the 1861 Census).  He was married to Catherine (nee Mahoney) and the 1861 Census shows that they had 2 sons living with them, Patrick (8) & Michael (6)... both at school.  At the time of the 1861 Census there was another man called O'Brien (Cornelius) living at the same address (5 Marsh St., Bristol... which had a large Irish Community).  Just across Bristol City Centre was St Mary's on the Quay, a Roman Catholic church where James & Catherine's children were baptized.  Based upon the fact that, in the 1861 Census, it shows that both James and Cornelius O'Brien were from Cork, I've assumed that they may have been brothers... and the 1861 Census indicates that Cornelius was from St Mary's, Cork.  So the record attached shows the baptism of James O'Brien to Charles and Margaret... who also had a son called Cornelius baptised, in St Mary's, in 1805.
