James Sweeny (Sweeney) was my G-G Grandfather and I am trying to find out more about the family and any members that remain in Fanad. James son William, left Rosnakill sometimetime between the late 1850,s and through the 1860’s and ended up in Port Glasgow, Scotland. I have full family tree on the Scottish side.

I’d be very please if whoever entered this info (and marked as ‘my direct ancestor’ ) could make contact.

Many thanks - Kevin Sweeney k_sweeney@sky.com

  • Hi my Great Grandfather was Edwrd Martin married to Susan Sweeney married March 7 1848 I think it was . Could this Susan Sweeney be related to you?. There is a Sweeney on my DNA match I think the name was Michael. My family was from Ballynalost. My cousin still lives on the Martin land.

  • Looking For a William Sweeney (Sweeny) born about 1883-1884 in Donegal Came to the US With his Wife Sarah Surname Kane and His Brother Hugh Sweeney around 1904/1905. My source run dry at the 1910 Census report in the United States.  A Search of this site has only yielded this Sweeny line in Donegal.  All of my Sweeney people are deceased so I am desperate for any clues to continue my hunt in Ireland/Scotland journey.

My father once said we were descended of the Mac Suibhne clan of Scotland but we all know how that goes. Sweeneys are like Smiths and we all want to think we are Descendants of Vikings warriors and Psuedo Scottish Royalty. I'm more keen on gleening the facts, not the myths. The only credence I give it the myth is that he did mention it long before genealogy on the internet and Wikipedia were a household thing.

if anyone out there who has access and like to hunt in the British Isles can plug any of my holes please feel free to reach out to me
