Johanna migrated with her sister Margaret in 1872 to South Canterbury, New Zealand. The girls grew up on the Kilfelim Townland in Currans Parish, County Kerry.They came ahead of their parents, Michael and Margaret Collins, and their siblings. The latter group arrived in 1874. In 1875 Johanna Brosnahan married James Poff, son of William Murphy Poff and Mary Barrett, from the Mount Nicholas Townland in Ballymacelligott Parish.
