John Daniel Carleton left Cavan in his youth and emigrated to the United States, living in Newark, New Jersey the rest of his life. At some point he started going by "Daniel" and changed the surname to Carrolton. In the early 1860s he interchangeably used Carleton, Carlton and Carrolton with the last surname being the one that remained.

He was christened 12 November 1820 and was a child of Patrick Carleton and Isabella Gilroy. Daniel had a brother or half brother William who also emigrated to Newark, New Jersey and became a successful hat manufacturer. William was listed in a later newspaper article as having been born c. 1828 "near Lord Farnham's Estate" in Cavan.
