My third great grandparents are John and Winifred (Devitt) Glasheen. John and Winnie baptised their nine children (Michael, Patrick, Bridget, Catherine, Mary, Thomas, Winifred, John and Martin) in Pallasgrean and Templebraden from 1824-1849. I am interested to learn more about where and how the family lived while in Ireland--and more about John and Winnie's parents and siblings. I plan a visit in May.

John, Winnie and children went to the US in 1849, settling in Hubbardston, Templeton and Gardner, Massachusetts.

  • In the US, there are five Glasheen lines, often with ties to the Limerick/Tipperary areas around Pallasgreen and Templebredon. Are they related? John's parents are thought to be Martin and Margaret (Leamy) Glasheen.
  • Upon arrival in the US, John, Winnie and family stayed for a while with Daniel Leamy in Hubbardston, Massachusetts. Is Daniel Margaret's brother, or related in some other way?

I see lots of Devitts in Irish parish records but haven't been able to locate Winnie (Devitt) Glasheen's parents, thought to be named Patrick and Bridget (Davis) Devitt, or her siblings. The Devitt name has lingered through the generations, with several men named John Davitt Glasheen.

My appreciation for any research ideas. It has been fascinating to learn more about the family and about Ireland as well.
