John O'Beirne 1849

Back to List

John came to the US sometime before 1886.  The oldest reference I have to him is when he arrived in Spring Valley, IL.

He was a supervisor in Mine Shaft 3 in Spring Valley...it was a coal mine.  His cousin, Charles Devlin owned the mine.  According to a copy of the 1888 Illustrated Spring Valley Gazette, John was a miner in Colorado and Idaho, where he mined coal, lead, and silver, prior to coming to Spring Valley, but it didn't say anything about the length of time he did that or when he came to the US.

John was married to Mary Agnes Hanafin.  They were married on 6 oct 1886 in Ottawa, IL.  She was born in Lasalle, IL on 29 September 1868 and died in Spring Valley on 9 July 1936.

His father, Patrick O'Beirne also came to the US t some point and lived in Chicago, IL.  Unfortunately, I haven't found any information as to how, when or where they came to the US or where they left from when they left Ireland.  John's mother was Mary Hopkins.  Patrick's parents were Patrick O'Beirne and Mary Healy.

John's siblings were James (1845-1854), Bridget (1847-1926), Patrick (1849-1929), Francis (1852-1929), Frank (1852-?) and Charles (1855-1924).

John's children were James (1888-1964), Gertrude(1890-?), John (1897-?), Kathleen (my grandmother 1903-1969), and Leonara (1905-?)

Kathleen married my grandfather, Leonard F. Kruspe on 9 December 1933 in Lake County, Indiana and they lived in Chicago.  My father, Leonard Robert Kruspe, was born on 21 Aug 1943 and died on 10 Mar 1994 in Tampa, FL, USA.

  • I would doubt (though it is possible) that your ancestors are from Roscommon. My great-grandfather's father James Gervé Conroy was from Roscommon, while his wife, Elizabeth O'Neill was from the O'Neills of the Feevagh in the vicinity of Toome towards Cranfield Point. The combination of Devlin, and Healy suggest to me most likely somewhere between Southwest Antrim about Toome and Eastern Tyrone, possibly North Armagh. Devlin is of course traditionally located about the North and Western shores of Lough Neagh, I stayed at a Devlin family's farm right near my family's old farm Southeast of Toome last I was there. Drummallon, in the Northeast extremity of County Tyrone has O'Beirnes, that is where Charles Byrne, the Irish giant was from. And Healy is a fairly numerous name in North Armagh and Antrim (though I know most numerous in Cork, Clare, and Roscommon), while there was only one Devlin listed in Griffiths in Roscommon, and that on the extreme Northern border, well distant from the parish of Roscommon.

  • Thanks for the info!!  What I have as far as the source of where they are from is from other family trees that listed John, his parents as well as several of his siblings as being from Roscommon.  That could, just as well, be referring to the county rather than the town.  I dont have much concrete info before John's arrival in Spring Valley, IL...it is all info derived from other people's information.  John's paternal grandmother was a Healy, so they could be from where you suggest.  Thanks again!!

  • Healys could be from a lot of places, it is really only the Devlins who are very specific to Ulster. There were definitely O'Beirnes in Roscommon too, thought you meant they had come from the same area ( which was fairly common back then as far as emigrating to the same place as friends, family, and neighbours)

  • Try the Catholic Parish of Aughrim ... (civil parish of  Kilmore)

Patrick & Mary Beirne are recorded as baptising the following children (among others):

James Beirne 27-Mar-1844 GP: Thady Lenaghan & Brigid Beirne

Brigid Beirne 05-Apr-1848  GP: William Hunter & Margaret Beirne

Charles Beirne 25-Apr-1853 GP: Edward Carty & Honor Reynolds

    > William Hunter is unique to the parish and Tithe records place him in the civil parish of  Kilmore, townland of Corgullion in 1834.

Caveat: there were a number of Pat Beirnes married to a Mary ... e.g. Healy / Smyth / Dean /Quinn / Duignan / and their surnames are not given in Baptism records. A Pat Beirne married a Mary Healy in this parish in 1835 (who technically could have been baptising 1836 through 1864).

There were Devlins aplenty baptising in the Catholic parish of Aughrim (not turning up on Tithe Records) in or about Foxwood Kilmore and in the civil parish of Tumna at Meera.
