Kathryn Augustine Finnerty was one of Martin Finnerty and Bridget/Delia Callen/Callon/Callan's 6 children:

  • Mary Finnerty (the one sibling that I believe stayed in Ireland);

  • Kathryn Augustine Finnerty;

  • Patrick J Finnerty, born 25 Feb 1890;

  • Ella Josephine Finnerty, born 26 Feb 1891 (in Peterswell);

  • Anna Marie Finnerty, born abt 1895; and

  • Joseph M Finnerty, born 26 Feb 1897

Kathryn Augustine Finnerty was born on the S/S Baltic as the family returned to Ireland from the United States. Her mother, Bridget, passed away 12 Apr 1900 in Peterswell and the children made their way to the United States one at a time, starting with Kathryn in 1904. Kathryn left Queenstown 2 Jun 1904 on the S/S Cedric and arrived in New York on 10 Jun 1904. She went to Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York where her aunt, Mrs. William O'Brien was living. Kathryn married Benedict William Fuller 27 Apr 1910 and they had 7 children, all in Canandaigua:

  • Albert Allen Fuller, born 11 Feb 1911, died 31 Jan 1971;

  • Kathryn Agnes Fuller, born 12 Feb 1912, died 4 Nov 1998;

  • Mary Elizabeth Fuller, born 18 Jan 1913, died 2 Aug 2003;

  • Benedict William Fuller, born 25 Sep 1914, died 25 Dec 1980;

  • Anna Marie Fuller, born 17 Aug 1917, died 12 May 1974;

  • Robert Henry Fuller, born 16 Aug 1924, died 2 Dec 1985; and

  • Rose Eileen Fuller, born 20 Jul 1926, died 5 Nov 1996

I'm a novice at researching records in Ireland and would appreciate any help that folks can lend. Initially, I'm hoping to find more information about Martin Finnerty and Bridget Callen. Ultimately, I'd love to find their families, if any, in Ireland.

  • You may already know this but in case you do not.. I found an entry in the Ireland County of Wills and Adminstrations, 1858-1920 on familysearch.org

    FINNERTY Bridget [47] 2 June Administration of the Estate of Bridget Finnerty late of Peterswell Loughrea County Married woman who died 12 Apr 1900 12 Apr 1900 granted at Tuam to Martin Finnerty Farmer and Shopkeeper the husband.  Effects 90 pounds

    Catherine's birth record at Sea says she was born April 23, 1888

    Bridget Finnerty was buried in the Carmelite Abbey Cemetery in Loughrea . This is a link to her findagrave entry  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/74585021

    Not sure if any of this is new to you. Hope it helps Marge Gillis

  • Thank you, Marge, for pointing out those records. I did have the Wills and Administrations record, which is the first one I've found that directly connects Bridget to Peterswell. I also have the document for Kathryn's birth at sea.

    Unfortunately, the FindAGrave record has to be a different Bridget Finnerty. The Wills and Administration record, which matches other information I have, says she died 12 Apr 1900 and she would have been around the age of 36 at the time of her death. The Bidget at Carmelite Abbey Cemetery was 72 at the time of her death in 1922. So, unfortunately, I think that means there were 2 different women named Briget Finnerty in the area.

    The Martin Finnerty in the Wills and Administrations is new to me, though, and I'll have to look into that one. The timing would line up with other family events, though. Kathryn was the first to leave for the United States in 1904.

    Thanks, again, for the help! I really appreciate it.

  • Now that I think about it you are correct it must be a differennt Bridget Finnerty.  I was thinking this entry had the death date of 1900 but now I see it has death date of 1922. also this woman was too old to have a child in 1890. So as you say there are more Bridget Finnerty's in the area. MArtin's entry in the Wills and Administrations database may not be your Martin Finnerty. I have found multiple Martin Finnertys also. Good luck

  • Wow! Thank you so much, Sister. This is overwhelming and a lot of information to digest. It's fantastic!

    First, my email address is MpPierce66@comcast.net.

    The policemen and shopkeepers are the first thing that jumped out at me when reading through the information. Interestingly enough, Kathryn Augustine's husband, Benedict William Fuller, was a police officer in Canandaigua, resigned to start a grocery store, and then returned to the police force when the grocery store didn't work out.

    One funny thing, in gathering the marriage records for Kathryn and her siblings, they all refer to their mother as Bridget or Delia Callen/Callon/Callan. On ONE record, I think it was Ella's, however, the mother's name was Callanan. Until now, I thought it might have been a mistake by the county clerk...but now it looks like it was the one and only time it was "correct." :-)

    I don't know if you saw my posting on the message board yesterday, but I found a legal notice for Michael J Callon that seems to connect the Finnerty and Callon families in Canandaigua, New York. I'm wondering if maybe they Americanized their name from Callanan to Callon at some point. I've ordered the Surrogate Court records that go with that legal notice and I'm hoping that those will help tie the families together.

    I have seen the 1901 census record you mention, but wasn't sure if it was the same family. Until now, I wasn't sure of the relationship to Ellen Harte.  Plus, I couldn't account for Ella and Joseph, and I didn't know who Delia was. At first, I thought that might be Ella, but you've found her elsewhere. In all of the information I've found thus far, including obituaries for Kathryn and all of her siblings, they never mention a sister Delia/Bridget. I'm curious what happened to her...

    Oh, and that legal notice I mentioned above does list Ellen Harte in Peterswell...so there's definitely some connection between her and the Canandaigua Callon family.

    The really new piece of information is that Martin and Briget met and married in Bayonne. Family stories had them meeting and marrying in Ireland, as well as Mary's birth. Again, that legal notice I mentioned above lists a lot of Callons in Bayonne...so this is all starting to click. Are you aware of what happend to Mary Finnerty, Kathryn Augustine's elder sister? The family story is that after their mother, Bridget, passed during childbirth, a relative in Canandaigua sent for Mary to come to America. But, Mary was in love with someone in Ireland and didn't want to leave, so Kathryn ended up going instead in 1904. I'm hoping that love turned into some Finnerty cousins in Ireland! :)

    Lastly, just to clarify my connection, Kathryn Augustine Finnerty is my great grandmother. Her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Fuller, is my grandmother. Mary Elizabeth married Elvin Henry Pierce...which leads to me, still a Pierce. If I'm following what you wrote, the full line is:

    • Martin Finnerty m. <unknown>; they had a son Jeremiah/Darby
    • Darby/Jeremiah Finnerty m. Ellen Hynes; they had a son Martin Finnerty (b. 20 Dec 1857)
    • Martin Finnerty m. Bridget/Delia Callanan in Bayonne, New Jersey; they had a daughter Kathryn Augustine Finnerty
    • Kathryn Augustine Finnerty m. Benedict William Fuller in Canandaigua, New York; they had a daughter Mary Elizabeth Fuller
    • Mary Elizabeth Fuller m. Elvin Henry Pierce in Canandaigua...my grandparents.

    Does that look right? I want to make sure that I'm tracking the Martin/Darby/Martin connection correctly.

    Another fun bit of trivia - I noticed that the grotto outside of Saint Thomas' Church in Peterswell is for Our Lady of Lourdes. My wife and I were married at Our Lady of Lourdes parish here in Denver, Colorado, which also has a similar looking grotto outside of the church. That grotto was built by my wife's grandparents...her grandmother being a Mooney from Peterswell. Yes...my wife and I both connect back to Peterswell, a fact that we found out when our grandmothers met at our wedding. Crazy!

    Again, thank you so very much for all of your help, Sister. I can't wait to see all of the documents and get all of this connected in my head (and my tree).

    Have a wonderful day,

    Michael Pierce
