Martin Murphy was born in Crossmolina on the 1st November 1878. I am his great granddaughter and am trying to find out more about him.  We know that he left Ireland to come to England but do not know when.  We find him on a census in 1901 , he was unmarried at the time and living as a boarder in the town of Brighouse, West Yorkshire, England, He was working as a stone quarryman - miner.

On 23rd May 1903 he married Margaret Mc Hugh who was born on 6th May 1882 in Liverpool.  She had 3 sisters, Catherine, Mary & Annie and brother Thomas.  It appears she and her siblings were all born in Liverpool.

By 1911 Martin & Margaret had a son and 2 daughters and had settled in Halifax West Yorkshire England.

In 1931 Martin became the landlord of The Lower George hotel in Woolshops Halifax England. He and his family lived there for 7 years.

His wife Margaret died in 1944 and Martin remarried in 1947 to Doris Stephenson, they went to live in Wyke, Bradford West Yorkshire England and lived there until he died in 1967.

I am trying to find out about his life before he went to live in England.  I would like to know if he had any siblings and information about them and his parents.   I know  that his father was called Michael (as evidenced on his marriage certificate).

I have found out from the Heritage Centre that his parents were called Michael Murphy and Mary Wilson.  I am confident it is the same person as they have the same date of birth.  I have his date of birth from the English 1939 census.  They told me they could find 2 siblings Edward Murphy b1881 and Rebecca Murphy b 1883.  I have a DNA match with a Great Grandson of James Thomas Murphy b 1873 in Killala who I believe to also be a sibling of Martin's but cannot be sure.  I guess I could find more information from the Heritage Centre but it is very expensive using one of their investigators.

I visited Crossmolina and Killala in 2019, it was lovely to see the places where my GGrandad would have known.  I know Murphy is a very common surname in Ireland but hoping to find out more information if possible.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Nov 1878
Date of Death 26th Dec 1967
Father (First Name/s and Surname) Michael Murphy

  • My great, great grandmother was Sarah Murphy b. 1805 who married my great, great grandfather James Maughan in Killala in County Mayo.  I have Sarah's parents as John Murphy and Mary Wilson. I am not 100% about any of it past my great grandparents.
