Migrated to/Born in USA

Mary Egan was born on 03 April 1891 in Creggan, north of Ferbane in County Offaly to John Egan and Maria Farrell (of Endrim.) She emigrated to Manhattan, New York to live with her uncle James Farrell about 1909. She later married John Tierney in New York, the son of Irish immigrants himself. He had 3 children from his first marriage. (His first wife died in the 1918 Spanish influenza epidemic, and a child died of diptheria a few months before her.) She and family moved with Uncle James to a house he bought circa 1920 in Jamaica, Queens, New York. She had a daughter Elizabeth (Jennings) who was born in Ireland in 1908, and a son Michael Tierney who was born in 1927 in Jamaica, NY. She lived with Michael and family in Elmont, New York before she died in 1973. Michael had 2 daughters and 2 sons, and I am the youngest (John).

  • Hi,

This is Stacey Egan. I don't know when this entry was written or who wrote it but I hope that someone will see this message. I believe I am related to you but not sure in what way. My great grand father is John Egan, not this womans father. But I believe the John Egan mentioned here, is a cousin to my great grand father John Egan. I am from Ferbane and have visited the grave of the above woman's parents.

    Hope someone finds this.

  • Hi Stacy,

Nice to hear from you! I wrote this profile of my Gran back when this site first started I think - just noticed it doesn't really say who wrote it. Odd!

When working on my family research I've seen other John Egans about and have always wondered how all the Egans fit together. I've kept in touch with several cousins from the area over the years but we've never really figured out the extended connections of the Egans etc we have found in various records.

One of my Dad's first cousins in particular has combined much of his work and mine into a document.

I'd be more than glad to share and compare any info I have. :)

Doesn't look like we can message directly here on Irelandxo. I don't want to put an email address out in the clear here, but if you'd like to send me a message through my genealogy blog's contact form we can catch up with details via email.

My contact form is here: http://currach.johnjtierney.com/contact/

    Regards from New York,
    John Tierney
