  • Does anyone know the name of her parents? Where in Country Antrim did she live? Did she emigrate elsewhere?

  • born in Ballentoy, her parents William Irwin 1785-1845 Jennie McGee born after 1780 at McGee Island.

    family stories:

John McCurdy, a native of County Antrim, as a young man and his brothers had come to America and settled farms, then returned to Northern Ireland in 1836 to get wives. The sailing ship on his return trip with Mary Jane took 13 weeks.

In 1900 their son Rev. James McCurdy made the same trip by steam ship. It took 8 days to cross the Atlantic.

John & Mary Jane moved from their farm in Port Kennedy, next to Valley Forge, outside of Philadelphia, to Mercer County. when son James was 6 years old in 1850.

My great grandmother was Mary Jane Irwin McCurdy born in Ballentoy, Northern Ireland (County Antrim) at age 96 she told her daughter-in-law this story

" I had me a bonnie lover but he was lost at sea in a fishing vessel. Then a young man from America, John McCurdy came courting. He was a goot man and i tuck him"

Mary Jane's siblings: Nancy, Mary, Martha, Rose, Jane, Harriett, Clarence.  Jane (1825-1916) also married and went to America to Philadelphia she married Joseph Steele 1801-1874 a china importer they had one daughter Eliza 1855-1939

  • Fabulous story, thank you for sharing. Those early pioneers had true grit!

I am trying to track down Timothy Irwin/Irvine 1799 (about) from Ballyeaston/upper Glenwhirry/Rashee also in Co. Antrim. We believe he also had a son William m. Mary Margaret O'hara, which may also have been the name of his wife.

Timothy has been rather elusive to track down in Ireland. He also fathered at least four other children: Andrew (1820-1889, my ggg), David, Mary Ann and Margaret who all emigrated to Canada in the 1840's. Thomas may be another son. My interest is always piqued when I see the name Irwin from County Antrim. Best wishes from Ottawa, Canada.
