Mary Moore was born in 1850 in Drogheda, County Louth, to John Moore and Elizabeth Brown. She was baptised on 1 December 1850 at St Peter's Catholic Church, Drogheda. She married Joseph Cooke and their daughter Catherine was baptised on 31 March 1876, also at St Peter's, with sponsors listed as James Cooke and Alice Moore. Soon after the family moved to Wigan, Lancashire, where their daughter Mary Alice was born on 2 Feb 1881. The family is listed in the 1881 UK Census, residing at 22 John Street Wigan. Catherine doesn't appear in the family's 1881 UK census entry, so it's possible she died in infancy. However the household also lists Owen Hallerin (born Cork) as Joseph's brother-in-law, and his wife Alice (born Drogheda). It seems reasonable to conclude that this is also Alice Moore, who was listed on Catherine's baptism record. Mary and Joseph's other two children were born in the following years, also in Wigan: James (1885) and Henry (1890). Mary was widowed in 1899 at the age of 49. In 1901 the census lists her as household head, hosting 3 boarders who were also from Louth: James Moore (21), Patrick Rodger (23) and Owen Rowley (30), who were all colliery workers. Her sons James and Henry were also living with her but their occupations are listed as cotton winders (mill). By 1911 she had moved to Barnsley, Yorkshire to live with her daughter Mary Alice and her family (Cunningham).
