Mary married John George (Jack) Leighton on June 30, 1921 at King Memorial Presbyterian Church in Winnipeg, the place where Mary's brother David had introduced them.  He and Jack had served together in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in World War I.

They moved to a Soldier's Settlement farm in Amaranth, north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and tried to raise wheat.  Unfortunately the land was poor and stony and the price of wheat was too low to make a decent living.  So after 2 years of very hard work, they walked away from it.  Jack's brother, Gordon, had moved to Chicago and was earning good money.  He convinced them to move where Jack eventually got a job delivering milk with a horse drawn wagon.  It was the most money he ever earned on a job.  Their first child, a son, was born there.  After 2 years, they returned to Canada.  They bought and moved into a 2-room house on an acre of land in Burnaby, British Columbia. Mary's sister Margaret (Peggy) and her husband David Wilson had moved to Vancouver several years earlier and like living there.

  • Thanks for that information, Patricia re: Mary's parents' marriage.  I don't have the church record, but I do have the civil registration of David and Mary Jane's marriage. I've linked that document to David Morrow

  • I am trying to find out more about the Morrow family as my gt-gt-grandmother was Lucinda Catherine Wilson, her mother was a Morrow.  Her mother married Henry Wilson in Laney, West Meath, Ireland.  Lucinda married Robert David Dagg and they emigrated to New Zealand in 1855 on the "Westminster".  I have no other information regarding the Morrow family unfortunately.
