Mary Padian 1860

Back to List

Mary was born about 1860 to John Padian and Margaret "Peggy" Hopkins. Her father had a three part share in an eleven acre farm in Tanseyfield and was extremely poor. She had many siblings including John, Thomas, Luke and Ann.

The Padians were related to their next door neighbours the Kennedys, and Mary godparented for Mick and Honoria Kennedy's daughter Julia in 1896.

Mick's wife Honoria died in 1899 and not even a year later, Mary was expecting his child. She was forty years old and had nothing for a dowry. Mick, with no interest in marrying her, left her until she was in full term. On 21 Oct 1900, they were married in Elphin, witnessed by Gilbert and Catherine Kelly. Two week later, Martin Kennedy was born.
