Migrated to/Born in Australia

James Williams and Esther Wickham

James and Esther are my 2nd Great Grandparents via their 3rd child Mary William, her 4th child Esther Anna Lambert and her 5th child Elizabeth Mary Gordon. I know little of the family’s life other prior to Mary emigrating to Adelaide, Australia with her elder sister Eliza in 1853 who then sponsored their brother John (2nd child) and younger sister Catherine in 1857.

The only facts I have been able to establish on the family’s life in Ireland are as follows:

30 August 1831:          James Williams married Esther Hill (widow, maiden name Wickham) In St Patrick’s Church, Kilquade, County Wicklow.

8 March 1832:             Eliza Williams daughter to James Williams and Esther Hill was baptised in St Patrick’s Church Kilquade, County Wicklow

5 August 1834:            John Williams son to James Williams and Esther Wickham was baptised in St Patrick’s Church Kilquade, County Wicklow

3 May 1836:                Mary Williams daughter of James Williams and Esther Williams was baptised in St Peter's Church Bray, County of Wicklow. Residence then Shanganagh.

9 December 1938:      Cath Williams daughter of James Williams and Esther Williams was baptised in St Michael’s Church Kingstown, County of Dublin. Residence then Kiliney. Kingstown is now called Dun Laoghaire.

It is claimed that there is another daughter named Bridget but I haven’t found evidence of this.

1848:   James Williams (widow) of Ballybrack Killiney admitted to the Rathdown Union Workhouse together with John and Bridget Williams.

1848:   Eliza Williams of Killiney admitted to Rathdown Union Workhouse

1849:   Mary Williams, servant, admitted to Rathdown Union Workhouse

12 May 1853   South Australian Government Gazette lists Eliza and Mary Williams as assisted migrants

5 June 1857    John and Catherine Williams arrived Port Adelaide, South Australia on the Ship Tantivy

Eliza (Elizabeth) married a William Hack in 1858, Mary a John Lambert in 1858 and Catherine a Andes Peter Johanson and all have many descendants throughout Australia and elsewhere. John did not marry but lived with Catherine until his death in Port Adelaide in 1904
