Stayed in Ireland

Patrick Barry Jr (b.1858) of Cloonfinlough Co. Roscommon, became a primary schoolteacher and worked in Ballinlough National School, where he met his wife, Anne Fitzgerald (also a teacher). They married on 20-Jul-1884 and raised a family in Mount Delvin, Ballinlough.

Did this family emigrate shortly after 1902? By the time of the 1911 Census, neither Patrick, Anne nor their 6 oldest children appear anywhere on record. Their two youngest children were living with their paternal aunt, Bríd Tully of Lismageevogue.

  • We are so happy to see this post.

Patrick Barry  senior and Mary of Cloonfinlough our great-great grandparents; however, we never knew Patrick and Mary's name though we were in Ireland (and strokestown) .  At that time ,we were looking for the grave of Patrick Barry Jr. which we never found.Patrick Barry's(jr.) children that we know of are:Mary, Kathleen, Michael, Pauline, possibly a Stephen ?,  Anne, Jane, Patrick?, Ellen, Frances, Gerald, Christine? We believe they all immigranted to US-Philadelphia area.

Michael1886-1975 ( one of Patrick Barry Jr. sons) was our grandfather who had 5 children in Philadelphia with wife Margaret Carr.

Children of Michael who went by middle name Joseph, and Margaret had the following children: Mary1916-1995, Jospeph 1918-2003, William1921-2002, AnnaMay(married last name Wreen)1923-2019, Francis1926-2008

My mother was AnnaMay who died two years ago.

Any info you like, or more info feel free to contact me.  Do you know where i could find out more info on the Barrys?  I went to strokestown library while there but to no avail.

  • Hi Kate

I'm related to you through the sister of Mary McDermott who married Pat Barry Sr.

Julia McDermott lived in Cloonybrennan near Elphin (she married a John McDermott). It's not clear where she was from originally, but it was likely she was also from Cloonybrennan.

  • Hello Rua,

Okay!  So Mary McDermott was possibly your great-great Aunt?  Do I have that correct?

More questions:  Do you have any idea where the Barrys/McDermott are buried?  We know nothing about them so anything you can share will be appreciated.

If you like to know anything about the Barrys and we have the answers- we be glad to answer.

I live in Colorado but most of the Barrys live on the eastern seaboard in New Jersey, Virginia, and Tennessee area and one in  Wisconsin.

Thank you for the post.  It is such a pleasant surprise.
