Born to Lawrence Phillips and Teresa Calaghan.  Enlisted in British Navy 1n 1899at age of 19.  Served on the cruiser, HMS :Niobe during the British-Boer War.  Was AWOL in So. Africa, visiting relatives who lived inland.  Instead of Court Martial, was placed in brig on bread and water for 30 days.  Jumped ship in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Emigrated from Canada, November 1909 at Port Huron, MI.  Listed occupation as Stone Cutter. last residence as North Bay, Ontario.  (located on the Canadian Pacific Railroad, his pryor employer.)    Listed destination as Denver, CO.

Married Mary Rooney in Pueblo, CO in 1910.

Registered with Military in September 1918, while residing in Georgetown, CO.  Built the family house at 118 Hazel Court where they appear in Census of 1920.

Became naturalized citizen in 1923.

Died in 1927 at age of 47.  Had been sick for two weeks after taking 6 months vacation from D & RG Railroad in Denver.  Probably died from a form of black lung disease.
