New Type Convicted of Larceny in Kilkenny City on 16 March 1840. Richard was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia on the vessel 'King William'. The 'King William' departed Kingston, Ireland on 28 April 1840 for New South Wales, Australia with 180 male prisoners, 9 free passengers (some sons of the prisoners), arriving 17 Aug 1840. Richard received his Ticket of Leave on 1 October 1847 and his Certificate of Freedom on 5 May 1849.
New Type Richard spent his married life on Moscheto/Mosquito Island, near Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Sadly, his wife Mary died at the young age of just 28 years old. She died in childbirth. After Mary's death Richard did not cope well and his children were raised by their maternal grandparents and extended family.
