Robert departed for Australia on 14th Jan 1871, from Plymouth, aboard the ship 'BENGAL'. Two years later in Melbourne, he married scottish Catherine McINTYRE. Robert and Catherine had nine children, two of those dying as infants. The birthplace of Robert is named as "near Londonderry" on his marriage certificate, and on the birth certificates of Janet, (1st child), Isabella, (5th child) Catherine (6th child)and Emma (8th child) as "Londonderry", of Joseph (2nd child) and Mary (4th child) as "Tyrone" and of Robert (3rd child) as "Derry". No parishes were ever mentioned. Robert was killed in 1893 in a mining accident, when Emma (my grandmother ) was only aged five.
Robert had a brother called John who also emigrated to Australia. John's death certificate (1882) states that he had been in Victoria for 16 years, making his arrival in Victoria about 1866.
The birth county shown on the birth certificate of his first son, on marriage certificate to Mary Ann Cunningham and on his death certificate is county Tyrone. No parishes were mentioned.
