Ross Michael O'Laughlin was born in Ennistymon, County Clare 20 May 1820.  He married Marie Burke in Ireland.  The couple had 2 children in Ireland.  A son, James Francis O'Laughlin born in 1844 in County Limerick and a daughter, Susan ( Sister Mary Aphrata )born 19 June 1846 in Monreel, Ennystynon, County Clare.

Ross Michael O'Laughlin emigrated to the United States in 1849 and was in Detroit, Michigan "under contract" .  It was in Detroit where the family eventually reunited before moving to Beaver Dam, Dodge County, Wisconsin.  Early Wisconsin census shows O'Laughlins living in a shanty until the father, Ross Michael eventually became a farmer and the family had more children and lived on a farm.  The site of the O'Laughlin's farm is now the corner of Main Street and Spring Street in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
