  • Thomas Alcock b. 1838 is my 2x Gt grandfather. I would like to find out when and whereabouts the Alcock's arrive in Ireland as this is not an Irish surname. The earliest reference I can find to Alcocks living in Kildare and near to Athy is in The Annals of Ballitore. There is mention of William Alcock married to Sally Mooney of Irishtown living in Ballitore in 1795. They had 20 children, then left Ballitore but unfortunately it does not say where they went on to. With so many children it is feasible that at least one of them eventually ended in Athy, but I can't prove it. Would anyone be able to help with this quandry?

  • Hi D Jackson

Thomas is my 3x grandfather,  his father was Richard Alcock b. 1802  d. 1869, his mother was Peggy (Margaret) Kelly b. 1809 Kildare.

From what I have managed to find in my researching is that Thomas's father, Richard, served on two ships between 1825-1834. The first was the Nimrod and then the Nautilus. He was 23 when he began service.  He would have been about 32 when he finished. (I think!)

I was able to find out who Peggy's parents were. Father was Hugh Kelly and mother was a Judy Ryan.

Thomas b.1838 Athy had a son Richard b.1879 ? who married Maria Keys.

Richard and Maria's children were Richard, John, George, Margaret, Patrick, Joseph and Mary.

George is my paternal grandfather and is burried in the old graveyard in Athy, his sister Mary (Cardazzo) is also buried with him and one of his brothers.
