Thomas Hunt was born in Cappawhite in 1816, the fourth child of Thomas and Mary Hunt.

His siblings were: Elizabeth (b 1811); William (b1812); Vere Robert (b 1814); Constance Charity (b 1818); Fitzmaurice (1821); Henry Hiet (b 1825); and Francis (b 1827). Elizabeth married Peter Doyle and emigrated first to Australia for ten years and then moved to San Francisco in 1851. Willliam emigrated to upstate New York with his wife, Julia Quirk, and children. He died in an accident in 1870 and shortly afterr his family moved to Chicago. Charity married THomas McClean and they and their children moved first to Syracuse, New York, then Des Mones, Iowa, and finally to Chicago. The remaining children - the five Hunt brothers (Vere, Thomas, Fitzmaurice, Henry, and Francis) emigrated to the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River (this forms part of the border between New York State and Canada) in 1849.

Thomas married Hannorah McGrath, who we believe was also from Cappawhite or very near it.
