William was born c. 1830 in India to Denis Nowlan and  Jane (Jennie) Dowd.

William married Mary Walsh in the Ballybunnion Parish on 11 Oct 1853. They lived in the Townland of Drombeg in the Parish of Galey, Registration district Ballylongford. Drombeg is not far from the town of Listowel in North Kerry.

William and Mary's eldest son Maurice b.1854 went to and settled in Australia. Their 2nd son Denis  b. 1856 went to the USA where he became a well known Priest in Northern New York. Sons John b. 1858 and Thomas b.1864 also went to the USA. Son  William b.1862 followed his older brother Maurice to Australia then went on to settle in NZ.  Their eldest daughter Mary b.1867   went to the USA and was the housekeeper for her brother Denis. The 2 youngest daughters Catherine b. 1869 and Ellen b. 1871 stayed home and married locally.
