Back to List

Winifred Hore/Hoare was born sometime between 1831 and 1834 in Ireland (she has slightly different ages in some censuses and age is stated to be 59 on death certificate in 1893). She married Martin Kelly before 1856 when their first child John was born.

Husband Martin leased 5 acres of land from John Blakeny at a cost of £2 a year according to Griffith's land valuation in 1854, in Corgowan township which is Kilglass parish near Strokestown. This area was badly affected by the potato famine in the 1840s and 1850s. The Kelly family moved from Ireland to Darlington in the north-east of England some time between July 1867, when their youngest child Mary was born in Corgowan, and the third quarter of 1868, when son Peter was born in Darlington. They had ten children in total, the first seven born in Ireland and the last three in Darlington in England.

In 1871 they lived at 5 Grey Street in Darlington. Daniel Hore, a possible brother of Winifred, lived in the next street, so they may have followed over. (In the 1891 English census, Daniel's DOB is stated to be Strokestown.)

The attraction was work in the local ironworks. Both Martin and Daniel were labourers in this industry.

Winifred's sister (Catherine Hore) and her brother (William Hore) were living with them at this time. William also worked in the ironworks as a labourer. Winifred and Martin's eldest son John also worked there. In total there were 12 people living in the house, four of them working as labourers in the ironworks.

In 1881 the Kelly family had moved to the next street, Prescott Street, with 7 children and 3 lodgers. By 1891 the family had moved to Stockton-on-Tees to 2 Alice Street, including 2 adult children and William, Catherine's brother. They shared the house with another family of 4. There were many other Irish families living on the same street. Next door at 4 Alice Street, lived Patrick Hore, his wife Hannah and his family of 5 children. Patrick was born in Kilglass according to the census. They also shared the house with another married couple. Winifred and Martin's daughter, Catherine, and her husband John Foley live at 19 Alice Street.

Winifred died at home at 2 Alice Street on 7.12.1893 age 59 of phthisis (TB). Son Michael was the informant of the death and his address was also stated to be 2 Alice Street. Her husband Martin dies in 1897 in Stockton.
