Ballinskelligs cable station

If you look closely at this photo you will see two stripped poles. The one of the left is easier to see. These were used as part of the Ballinskelligs cable station which was established in 1874. Nearly all of the buildings have been demolished now, but were used most recently as a base for summer school students. Before this they were used by the British company, Direct United States Cable who established a commercial cable business in Valentia. The striped poles are no longer standing but it is thought that they may have been used to alert shipping to the underwater cables in that area.
