The home of my great grandfather James (Jim) Byrne and his parents.

This is the home of my great grandfather, James (Jim) Byrne and his parents. James Byrne married Margaret "Maggie" Walsh (daughter of Nellie Morrissey and Paddy Walsh). After their marriage, they most likely lived here. Their son Martin Joseph Byrne is my grandfather. Martin married Bridget "Bridie" Irene Moore. My grandparents migrated to the United States in 1912. Their third child, Martin Joseph Byrne is my father. I live near Seattle, Washington and hope to connect with my relatives in Ireland.

  • Keith,

Your comment makes me wonder about the Brynn lineage from Kilkenny. Maybe the Brynn and Byrne familes crossed paths or were neighbors. Based on my grandmother's birth in Ireland, I began an Irish citizen (now dual citizenship American/Irish). I plan to visit Ireland this summer.

Can you please clarify the Parish your family are from and where the house in the photograph was (is) located. I'm not part of your line as outlined in the description but I suspect we could be connected one or two generations further back. I come from five generations of James Byrne and there are also multiple Martins which follows Irish naming conventions. The Parish of Odagh and the area around Freshford had many Byrne families with a hill named Cnoic na Brinn ( Hill of the Byrne's). This may explain Keith's post although I have never seen a surname Brynn and would suggest that it is more likely to be 'Bryan' which is an anglisied version of O' Brien.

  • From what I have found, my grt grandfather, John Mcgrath married a Mary Brynn 6 August 1866 in danesfort. Mary was born in danesfort 20 May 1839. Her siblings were, James, 1840,danesfort, Margaret, 8 Jan, 1854,and Michael, 11 August 1851, Thomastown.
I think her father was John Brynn, 1815,who married Judy Ryan. Not sure if that bit is correct.

  • My grandmother, Margaret Byrne, was married th John Lutterell.  They got married in Kilkenny, 28 November 1857.  Do these names come up in any of your records on the Byrne family?  On the register it says the residence is Maudlin Street.  Lutterell is spelled Lutterell in this record. Thank you.  Judy

  • Pat,

Yes.  I believe I saw St John’s on one of the children’s baptism records.  The word Kilmogar is not familiar.  The children were Edward, Alice, Richard, John, Michael and Joanna.  Thank you for getting back.  Judy Link Salvatore

Pat.....Further to your note above , I hope the following can offer some direction. St Johns is the main parish in Kilkenny City , this is not the birthplace but simply where the baptism occured. Kilmogar is a townland in Clara which is 3 miles East of Kilkenny. Your inofrmation source may simply showing the baptism was in St Johns and the family resident in Kilmogar. Looking at the Census records of 1901 there are Byrne's with the christian names you mention in your first note living in Kilmogar. From what I can see we are an indirect line if the people in the census are your family. Why do I come to that conclusion ? , the predominence of the same names James , Martin , etc follow the irish naming convention and the limited number of Byrne's in the area.

    Happy to share further details

  • Pat.....Having looked more carefully this does seem to be your famaily. Martin was born in 1880 and had 6 siblings. I have also checked the 1911 Census and the family are still at the same address. I would expect the members of this family are buried in Clara and it is highly likely there are decendants still living in the area. With the records that are available it should be possible relatively easily to go back at least one generation before James. As a sharing point I have recently submitted by DNA to a database to see the connections it may show. I'm also interested in seeing the spread of my gene pool ( all of my family are pure Irish for 200 years so it may be a bit boring). Lastly , my interst is in the back story of the people who emigrated , about where they landed and their life story.

  • Hi Amanda,

I am seeing so many posts lately. If you post your email address, I can send you excellent documentation of my Byrne side of the family from Kilkenny.

FYI: I live near Seattle, Washington USA and recently traveled to Ireland. In Kilkenny, the St. John's Parish gave me a contact who is reasearching more family details.

    Amanda,

I specialise in the Byrne family in the Kilkenny area and I'm back to the late 1700's in my own direct line. I keen to broaden my research back to the wider family line and in particular pick up where people have moved around the world. Would it be possible to share the source of the information about the people you mention plaese ( ttpaulyawl@gmail.com). Lucy is not a common christian name in rural Ireland at the time and would have been more likely to be see in Urban areas such as Dublin. If you look at the 1901 Census there are no Lucy Byrne's in Kilkenny. Google Irish naming conventions and that will explain how christian names used to be chosen right up to the 1960's ( and indeed in some families still today). Understanding this helps tracking your relatives in church records. If you have any information about here in Kilkenny your Byrne roots came from that will be of great help
