Farmland near to where James Tobin was a Tenant Farmer

This is the farmland where my Great Great Grandfather James Tobin was a tenant farmer in Gortknock.

He farmed a plot that was in the next field to the right of the marker.

The net value of the land and buildings was £89

Hi,My great, great grandmother Rose Tobin lived in Castlecomer, born in 1840.  She had a son, John Blanchfield (my grandfather) illegitimately, in 1870 in Baurnafea.  We can't trace what happened to her after her son left Ireland to fight in the Boar War.  We think she married Lawrence Dunne (or Dewane) and remained in Castlecomer, although this may be incorrect.  Could she be related to your James Tobin?

    Kind regards

    Barbara

  • Hi Barbara and tobinkin,

All of the details that I have about James Tobin are as follows:

Michael Tobin was born in Windgap, Callan, Kilkenny, in 1829,

His Father, James Tobin was a tenant farmer to Richard W Morris in Tullahought, Knockeen, County Kilkenny, Ireland

Michael enlisted in the army aged 15 and joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers -103rd Foot regiment.

He was stationed in India where he became a Hospital Sergeant.

He married Mary Patton, aged 33 and died in Sattara, India on 15th December 1869 aged 41.

They had at least one child who was a son called James Edward Tobin who was born in  March1869 and married Sara Mary O'Reilly in 1898 in Karachi, India (at the time).

Sara died in 1929. I know that James survived her but do not know when he died.

These were my Grandparents. My father was Norman Louis Tobin who was born in 1902 in India. He married Katherine Viegas in 1950 and we all moved to London in about 1952

As yet, this is all that I have found out about my family.

I will look out for your family ancestors during my searches.

    Good luck with your research,

    Kathy Payne

    Hi Kathy

Thank you for your information. I will keep digging for details of my Tobin ancestors and perhaps I will find a connection at some point.

    Kind regards
