  • Lough Gur was an important social gathering place in the early 1900's and In the 1930's my father would visit the site on most Sundays ,especially during the summer months as it was as well known as a recreation and swimming facility as for its heritage. He recalled to me the day one of a group of swimmers was attacked by a large pike and was rescued by his friends.Seemingly this fellow had fallen behind the others and the pike must have seen him as a struggling animal. He suffered severe lacerations to one of his legs. Many a romance began at Lough Gur. In the 1980's I was a Coillte employee and was involved in the planning of establishing a forestry plantation on the Ballyhoura mountains overlooking Lough Gur when I stumbled on a ring of boulders hidden in the tall heather. The archaeology Dept. of UCC were contacted and they visited the site to inform me that this was the remains of a look out post for the settlement in Lough Gur and fires would be lit to warn of approaching danger. This was an unrecorded archaeological site. Donie O Sullivan
