Well known as a tourist destination, the village is in the barony of Moycullen, 9 miles west of Galway, on the bay of Galway
Going back to Lewis’ tour in the previous cen-tury, the town retained a pier, built by the Fish-ery Board, which is the only place of shelter for boats on that side of the bay.
In the nineteenth century there were two small thatched chapels, one at Spiddal and the other at Minna. Today the villages is one of the most picturesque in the county.
