In 1859, the Greenhouse Effect was finally proven by Leighlinbridge native John Tyndall. 

Though the existence of the Greenhouse Effect had been discussed in scientific circles since 1824, it was not until Tyndall measured the infrared absorption of gases and vapours in 1859 and the theory was irrefutably proven.
