18th Century Rowntree in Sharcock, County Cavan

I had a quick look at RootsIreland (subscription site), which has transcriptions of church records and the earliest I found is as follows:

There are a couple more in that parish and some more for Bailieborough and Kilsherdany.

Search on https://cavantownlands.com/shercock-parish/  There you can see that they are not in the Tithe Applotments or in Griffiths Valuation (1847-1864) either, Adams by then is the landlord for Shinan.  Fitzherbert is mentioned in 1652

You may have visited the Registry of Deeds and obtained your above information, if not, is is well worth the visit.  There are more details available at https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/owning-a-home/buying-a-ho….  Do go with a friend as there is a lot of heavy books to be lifted.  You may need a couple of visits.

There are still Rowntrees in the area and do consider alternative spellings such as Roundtree etc.

Attached to this reply is the original probate index book naming William Rowntree and several others from various Irish counties. There are two facing pages to the index book. William Rowntree is the 4th entry up from the bottom of the left-hand page.

This next index shows that William’s wife was Elinor, of Sharcock, and that the date of the probate was 10 May 1735.

A copy of the original record is attached to this reply. William is number 92 on the right-hand page. It reads, “Rowntree Wm Sharcock Co. Cavan Gent to Robert Crawford for Elinor-the Wid-”

Also attached is an Ordnance Survey Map in colour from circa 1840 showing the location of Shercock and Shinan in County Cavan. The map is from the free GeoHive website. The landmarks on the map for Shercock, beginning from the north are the Market Ho.; Police Station; Post Office; Church; and the School Ho. The church refers to Church of Ireland.

Just to the west of Shercock is the Muddy Lough, and to the left of Muddy Lough are the School Ho.; Shinan Ho; and the Shinan Lough.

The same Ordnance Survey Map with the townland of Shercock magnified is also attached.

Though the map is not from the 18th century, it does give a snapshot of what Shercock and Shinan looked like 100 years after William Rowntree died in 1735.
