I recently had a close DNA match with a person who had Kenny realives from Tawnaghmore and Balla, County Mayo in the 1800's. Is anyone familar with the Kenny family from Tawnaghmore? I suspect that Andrew Kenny (1786-1866) is the father of Andrew Kenney, my 2nd great grandfather, but I'm looking for some local family histories. My 2nd great grandfather was born in 1831 and left for New York in the 1850's.

Thank you,

Jeremy Kenney

  • Can you supply more info about your second gg Andrew? siblings? marriage? to whom? children's names in order? death?  This info would assist with the research.

  • Thank you for your time, Patricia! The trail for my second great grandfather, Andrew Kenney, is unknown in Ireland. All we know of Andrew comes from records in the United States. He was born around 1831 in Ireland, presumabley Tawnaghmore, Mayo. His father may have been Andrew Kenny (1786-1866). We know that Andrew Kenny had a son  named Michael, born in 1821 who inherited his farm upon his passing. My 2nd great grandfather arrived in Manhattan around 1855. He married Ellen Neely in 1856 and had several children in birth order:

    1. Mary Elizabeth Kenney 1857–1898 (Jersey City, NJ)
    2. Sarah Regina Kenney 1859–1939 (Manhattan, NY)
    3. Thomas F. Kenney 1861–1900 (Staten Island, NY)
    4. Andrew Kenney 1862–1899 (Pittsburgh, PA)
    5. Joseph Martin Kenney 1864–1907 (Staten Island, NY)
    6. Catherine E. Kenney 1869–1870 (Philadelphia, PA)
    7. William Frederick Kenney 1871–1943 (Philadelphia, PA)

Andrew was a Steel Melter by trade and Roman Catholic. He passed away in Philadelphia in 1883. My last name is Kenney, but I match males via DNA, the Kenny family in Tawnaghmore, Mayo. I suspect that my Andrew is the son, of very close male relation, to Andrew Kenny (1786-1866). I'm looking to prove or disprove this hunch.

    Thanks again for your interest!
