Need help finding my Maternal Grandmother's family - I have some records for her and her name is listed Mullen and others have Mullin - she was born on March 14, 1910 in Carbury Kildaire Ireland and passed on December 26, 1964 in Cambridge Massachusetts USA.  She sailed on the ship Franconia which left (COBH) Queenstown on June 15 1930.

Would appreciate any help - thank you

Linda

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

This may be your family in the 1911 census with Anne's grandfather John Keogh. The father Bernard was away.   http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002568577/   Note that the oldest child was born in America and since I was unable to find a civil marriage record possibly Bernard and Anne married in America.

The 1901 census has John Keogh and his wife Catherine and grandaughter Alice Kelly  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kildare/Kilrainey/Nurney/1438501/

John Keogh died in 1916 and his son in law Bernard was the informant  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1916/05251/4455742.pdf

Catherine Keogh died in 1906  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1906/05569/4563971.pdf

  • Thank you so much Roger - I did find the 1911 census and think it is my grandmother's family --  I know she had a brother (Uncle Jack) I posted the 1911 census info on my ancestry - have received several hints and someone's family tree listing this family - I sent that person msg to see how we are connected

I assume you are in Ireland if so --  I am hoping to go to Ireland this summer - I want to visit Carbury since my grandmother was born there - can you give me any advise on trying to find any living relatives the census doesn't go past 1911

    Thank you again

  • Hi Linda

I'm one of the Kildare volunteers contacted by Jane.

I found the same info as Roger and continue to look for further information, but I just wanted to you note that your Grandmother Anne was actually born in Nurney, County Kildare.  Her birth was registered in the District of Carbury in the Union of Edenderry but the place of residence given by the father is Nurney.  This is the same location given on the birth certs for Luke Mullin (b 1907) and John Joseph Mullen (b 1908) and also on the death cert of John Keogh (d 1916).

The town of Carbury is in the north of the county and Nurney is just south of Kildare Town.

I would recommend looking for further confirmation of the location of the family home before you get to Ireland and maybe head to the wrong town.  I hope to find some more helpful info for you and as I live 5 minutes from Nurney I should be able to investigate the graveyard and maybe even the parish records.

    All the best.

  • Is Nurney - Carlow or is it Kildare? --  not sure I have figured out how the names work ---

    Hi again Linda

Apologies!  The names are confusing and I made the mistake of assuming Nurney = Nurney 5 mins from me.  Really sorry about that.  There is actually another townland in the north of the county, in Carbury which must be your ancestors townland as all the references relate to Carbury.  I've attached a word doc with the details and the link at the top of the page will bring you to the website where I found the information.  It may help you to have a look at it.

Again, really sorry for the misinformation.  I hope the attachment helps clarify the locations.

    Regards

    Linda

Thank you so much - but I am more confused than ever (lol) --- ok -- so my grandmother comes from Nurney Carbury Kidare?

Wow I'm so confused --  have a feeling I'm gonna get lost in Ireland (and never be heard from again )

Thank you so much again - I  really appreciate all your help  --

  • Quite possibly Linda.  I live here and I don't know where I am half the time!

I've emailed the Carbury Parish office to see if they have any information for you.

It can be difficult to find living relatives but I wonder if you know what happened to the rest of your Grandmothers siblings?  Did they all head to America?

My grandmother's brother John came to USA before her -- I didn't know she had other siblings till I started researching ---  it's funny I remember my Uncle Jack but had no idea if he was my grandmother or grandfather's sibling --   my grandparents both passed when I was young ---  never asked my mother about them - now that I want information I have no one to ask - both my parents are deceased --

I traced my grandfather's family 1st and exchanged emails with one of his nephews - that's how I knew Jack was my grandmother's brother - my Uncle Jack had children here -- I sent message thru Ancestry.com - haven't received a response not sure if they know what became of his siblings

On the Ireland census of  1911 says Mary was born in USA -  is it possible the census was wrong?

    Hi Linda

I've heard back from the parish office in Carbury.  Unfortunately they cannot find a marriage record for Bernard Mullin/Mullen and Anne Keogh, but they might know of a living relative of the Mullen family.  They are investigating further but there are data protection issues which prevents them from giving out information without permision.

They also sent a copy of an extract from the 1981 Balyna Annual which was written by a Barney Mullen.  It's a lovely piece which I've attached for you.

There is very little coming up online for the Mullin/Mullen Keogh so I think a trip to the General Registers Office in Dublin is required.

I will keep you updated on everything.

  • Hi Linda

Sorry, I didn't reply to your query in your last post.  It is possible that the census is wrong about Mary Mullen being born in the US but I think it is unlikely.  The place of birth for Catherine is King's County which is actually County Offaly and I did find the birth cert for her for the District of Rhode in Edenderry, Co Offaly.  All the other children's places of birth are also accurate so it's very likely Mary was born in the US - just having difficulty finding her!

If we could find her it would probably help with finding her parents marriage details.

Found a birth record for a Mary Mullen born 16/08/1904 in Boston, Suffolk, Mass.  Parents Bernard Mullen and Annie Keogh both from Ireland.  Father working as a janitor.  Living at 120 Marginal Street, Boston.

This record can be viewed on FamilySearch.org.

    Sadly, still no marriage record.

  • OMG Linda - I can't thank you enough --  this is wonderful.

I found Uncle Jack's passenger list /immigration - last night - - said he was going to stay with sister Mary Nurney -- from there found her on census - she married Thomas J Nurney - had a son Thomas --

if it's correct person also found her on passenger list for Laconia coming to Boston  --  1932 listed with her son Thomas 3 yrs old - so I guess she went back & forth few times shes also on a passenger list 1934

I searched both FamiySearch.org and Ancestory.com could not find marriage for Mary and Thomas  (or Bernard & Catherine) either here or in Ireland --

If I have correct info for Mary she was born Aug 16 1904 and passed away March 4 1995 - still looking for info on her

I am really so thankful for your help -

I'm sending you an email directly with some more information.  I found the son of Mary and Thomas Nurney, Thomas aged 3 in 1932, and it has revealed a bit more information for you in relation to Mary and her family.  John J Mullen is also in there on the 1930 census staying with Mary and her family in Boston.

If you don't see an email from me check your spam folder or let me know here.

    Thanks
