My maternal Grandparents are burried at Ballintubber Abbey.  My Mother was born in Cogaula in the parrish of Islandeady; my Mothers maiden name is Quinn and my maternal Grandmothers maiden name was Dougherty. I was not sure which parrish to join; Islandeady or Ballintubber so I chose the former where my Mother was born.  My surname is Naughton and my paternal Grandmothers maiden name was Gibbons; I do not know the parrish of my Fathers birth, although Ballinrobe comes to mind.  I would like to find out all I can about my ancestors; I was born in NY City in Manhattans Inwood Heights neighborhood. Both of my parents were born in Mayo Ireland and as far as I know all of their forbearers were born in Ireland......that's the part I would like to find out about.  I have been to Ireland many times in my childhood for months at a time, I feel like I grew up in Mayo. I have more details about my family that I can add just feel free to ask.     Can you provide the names of your grandparents and the approximate year they were born? I checked the 1901 and 1911 censuses and there were no Quinn families shown in Cogaula but there are Gibbons families. Let me know.

    My Grandparents names were William and Bridie Quinn.

    The GPS coordinates of the Cogaula farm wher my Mother was born are listed below:

    53.771714, -9.263043

    Quinns still run this farm; my Cousin.

  • Hello, Johnnie. As far as I know, you aren't limited to joining 1 parish when you're researching your ancestors. I began by joining the 2 where my grandmother and grandfather were born. If you don't know the parish you can post your enquiries on the county board.

    As I understand the parish limit applies when you add your ancestors to a parish in the Chronicles. A person can't be in more than 1 place. Therefore when I add my uncles and aunts to their most relevant parishes in the Chronicles, they will be spread among 6 parishes, since both their parents travelled about a bit and had children born in a few places, and so did they.

    I hope I have explained it correctly.
